Nutty Notes: When food presents itself

At some point in my life I heard or read a quote along these lines:

“Before we eat with our mouths, we eat with our eyes. I do it all the time. Don’t you?

My family, in my opinion, is health conscious. As children we did not have a twenty-four-hour snack cupboard in our kitchen, and I remember the most I snacked on during road trips were small packets of Snappers chips- damn, those were real treats.

Visiting friends as a child, you can only imagine the thrill I would experience upon finding a jar of sugar-filled gummies or sweets sitting peacefully on their kitchen counter on display, beckoning to me.

My mum grew up in a home in which there was virtually no control on eating habits. My dad is a Medical Doctor and a passionate reader on diet practices.

Someone had to change, and in turn we grew up with a lot of healthy eating guidelines in our home.

I was a troublesome, lazy eater and had almost zero percent of iron in my body, which landed me in hospital many times. I remember dreading the mornings when my dad would make me carrot juice, just to get those precious nutrients down my body, each sip tasting more awful than the one preceding it. God-Bless my parents for having successfully dealt with my bullshit for so many years❤.

We no longer drink carrot juice😂. I mean, we have progressed to being much more aware of our diet and a part of that is owed to my mum’s salad making. She has made it a habit that’s grown onto each of us, to serve a platter with our meals almost every day.

My friends, who joined us for a meal a while ago, still cannot get over my mums’ timely efforts in making a salad. After their visit I received a text message asking for the recipe, to which my mum had a good laugh.

You are probably thinking what was so special about this salad. The answer is, nothing.

“You don’t need a silver fork to eat good food. “Paul Pruhomme.

It’s the representation of the salad with the same old ingredients, the little extra effort you put in that targets your sight, triggers your taste buds and pulls all five senses into the experience of eating. Why do you think a fancy restaurant works so hard to plate its food so perfectly? Two dishes side by side, and we are almost always drawn to the more appealing dish first.

Getting my salad toppings is now a click away, I have no excuses when my mum asks me to plate the next salad. With a variety to choose from nuts, dry fruit and seeds I don’t know what’s more exciting, eating the salad or making the salad.
